QUEST Fall Semester 2011 Entry #10: "Making Healthy Choices"

"Don't be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn your back on evil. Then you will gain renewed health and vitality." - Proverbs 3:7-8 (NLT)

If you are a new student experiencing college life or returning to the familiar campus, one of the most important lessons you can learn is keeping your body healthy. The amazing thing is that God created your body. As a steward or carekeeper of your body, it is important that you take good care of it. You only get one this side of heaven. Here are some practical tips:

(1) Physical Exercise
Your schedule may be hectic, but make room for physical exercise. You may like sports, going to the campus gym or recreational center or walking/running around the track. Rather than taking an elevator, use the stairs. Some changes in your physical activity routine can make a huge difference in your physical health, energy, and stamina.

(2) Good Nutrition
I know the campus food and options may lean heavily on fatty foods and quick snacks. But, in this area, intentionality is the key. You should not deprive yourself of a treat here and there. But, for your daily intake of food, start making some choices for healthy snacks (fruits and veggies). Rather than soda or juice, try drinking more water. Watch how late you eat as well for digestive purposes. Encourage your friends to do the same. When I was in college, these choices were difficult, but had to be learned. You may find the habit of eating healthy a welcomed change.

(3) Keep a Journal
Some people do this differently: writing, keeping a personal blog, video blog, etc. However you decide to do it, keeping a health journal helps you see how much you are intaking and how much you are expending during the day. I was surprised to see how many calories I was eating and the lack of exercise I was doing. Sometimes seeing it helps you change your patterns.

These are a few tips to get you started. Making healthy choices is not just about your image, but maintaining a healthy lifestyle. If you want to be strong and full of vitality in your college years and beyond, your healthy choices now will make all the difference.
